- Oct 305:00 PMVietnam's Buried Colonial Past: Cham and Khmer Voices of SurvivanceThrough the lens of subaltern histories, we will uncover overlooked Cham and Khmer sources that offer a powerful counterpoint to the mainstream narrative of Vietnamese history. These sources reveal stories of dispossession and colonialism, population displacement, the destruction of local powers, and forced cultural and religious assimilation. As part of the session, we'll also examine a rare primary source: a survey on Cambodia prepared for the Vietnamese imperial court in the 1820s-1830s. Between the lines, it reveals Vietnam's deeper ambitions for Cambodia. Notes will be shared in advance, and together we'll debate what it tells us about colonial power. This is an Honors Event.
