- Oct 712:30 PMEugenics, Statistics, and AI: From Past to PresentAbout this Event What can we learn from the history of eugenics about the risks and the ethical application of AI in medicine and public health today? How are eugenic practices of the past shaping the algorithms and extending the legacies of those practices into the present? Dr. Craig Spencer will discuss historical determinants of public health and medicine in the AI age and ask whether we are seeing the normalization of eugenics 2.0. About the SpeakerCraig Spencer (https://pandemics.sph.brown.edu/people/craig-spencer-md-mph), MD, MPH is an emergency medicine physician and Associate Professor of the Practice at Brown University School of Public Health. With nearly two decades of experience in global health and humanitarian response, he has worked on critical public health issues across Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond, including leading the epidemiological response and treating patients during the West African Ebola outbreak. Dr. Spencer's work focuses on the historical foundations of public health, humanitarian response, and pandemic preparedness. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Washington Post and more. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Board of Advisors for Doctors Without Borders USA. Describe strategies for incorporating active learning in a large enrollment course 2. Discuss the positive impact on mental health associated with active learning Description In case you missed this session at the 2025 Assessment Institute, we are offering this wonderful session again… A large (135 student) course underwent systematic improvement over a 6-year span. This improvement was accomplished using feedback and introducing active learning. The improvement also included exploring the positive impact of active learning on mental health. This process successfully improved student evaluation scores to a 5.0 average.
