- Sep 185:00 PMBureaucracy and DemocracyBureaucracy gets a bad rap. Illegitimate, unaccountable, grudging, mean—bureaucracy seems to need some extra justification to make it palatable to a democratic society. At the same time, democracy depends on bureaucracy: the decisions elected representatives make have few effects without someone to implement them. And because a steady pace of elections changes the makeup of political coalitions, the democratic decisions of the past need custodians to keep them efficacious and current over time, through change. Drawing on empirical research, this talk clears a place for bureaucracy at the heart of the democratic project. It argues that bureaucracy is the condition of possibility for democratic legitimacy in a modern mass democracy like the United States. It highlights key characteristics and functions that we should preserve, strengthen, and reform. And it explains why an attack on the administrative state is actually an attack on representative democracy itself.RSVP Coming Soon If you require a reasonable accommodation for a disability, please contact the Law School at 860-570-5079 or via email at law.studentservices@uconn.edu (mailto:law.access@uconn.edu) at least two weeks in advance.

- Sep 199:00 AMPSELC: Essential Skills for Grant-Writing & Diversified Revenue Streams for Nonprofits & Government AgenciesInstructors:Alyssa Goduti, President & CEO, Adelbrook Beverly Catchpole, Chief Giving Officer, CT FoodshareThe success of any nonprofit or government organization is contingent on its mission, vision, governance, ability to run quality programs and most importantly on its ability to raise funds. Organizations with the knowledge, skills and expertise to seek out and successfully win grants are more likely to thrive in this increasingly competitive funding environment. The grant-writing session will help you better understand how to identify grant opportunities and develop winning proposals. In the Diversified Revenue workshop Bev will provide follow up to the morning session by exploring varied revenue streams and fundraising tactics. Much like a diversified financial portfolio, diversified revenue streams enable your organization to weather the ups and downs of internal and external factors that can suddenly reduce your funding. The healthiest organizations rely on many sources of revenue for current funding needs, sustainability of programming, and even provide revenue for the future. Topics will include diversified revenue streams, direct marketing – both digital and direct mail appeals, corporate sponsorships, the role of events, mid-level and major individual gifts, planned giving, and new technology to help drive revenue and current trends in the philanthropic landscape.
