- Oct 1512:15 PMPhilosophy Department Brown Bag Nadja-Mira YolcuUtterances of "because"-sentences are typically construed as assertions about an explanatoryrelation betweenthe propositions expressed by the adjoining sentences: with "The street is wet because it has been raining" speakerSasserts– at least often –that the fact that it has been raining causally explains the fact that the street is wet. Thus, "because"-sentences are often understood as expressing logically complex propositions describing some metaphysical relation between facts.However,"because"-sentences are ambiguous insomesense (see, e.g.,Morreall1979, Sweetser 1990,Kanetani2019,Shaheen2021).The sentence "The street is wet because it has been raining"can, in suitable contexts, also be used to give a reason for one's belief that the street is wet.In such a case, the utterance does not describe a relation between facts, but, we claim, expressesa reason-relation between beliefs. We aim to philosophically explore the ambiguity and consider some criteria that would differentiate between the two uses.We argue that "because" islevel-ambiguous. In itsfact-explanatoryuseit operates onmental statecontent: with "The street is wet because it has been raining"Sasserts and expresses the belief that the street is wet because it has been raining. In itsreason-givinguse, however, "because" operates onexpressivecontent: on the attitudes expressed. With "The street is wet, because it has been raining" in its reason-giving use,Sexpresses that she believes that the street is wet because she believes that it has been raining. Reason-giving acts are not descriptions of explanatory relations between propositions but expressions ofbasing relationsbetween attitudes. We explore several criteria to distinguish between the two uses: one criterion is based on the possible role of epistemic adverbs, the other depends on whether "as" can play the role of "because", and a third, epistemological criterion refers to the agent's rational update behavior. We will show how our view can be implemented in linguistic tree structures. Most importantly, we will bediscussing some philosophical consequences of the two uses of "because"(Freitag 2024)
