- Oct 85:30 PMMath Club: Fermat's last theorem for polynomials, by Caylee Spivey (UConn)Many statements about solutions to equations in integers can require very sophisticated mathematics to prove. For example, Fermat's last theorem is about solving \(x^n + y^n = z^n\) in positive integers when \(n > 2\) and it was unsolved for over three hundred years. Polynomials are analogous in many ways to integers: in both settings we can add and multiply, as well as factor. Solving equations in integers can be replaced with solving equations in polynomials, but in the polynomial setting there can be much simpler methods of proof. In this talk, we will see how Fermat's last theorem for polynomials can be proven using ideas from calculus. Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.
