- Nov 55:30 PMMath Club: Solving equations by factoring, by Georgia Harbor-Collins (UConn)The study of integer solutions to polynomial equations in two or more unknowns is a topic that goes back to ancient times. With Diophantus' book 'Arithmetica' (c. 270 A.D.) inspiring the likes of Fermat, these so-called Diophantine equations paved the way to modern day number theory. We will see how the integer solutions to these equations can sometimes be determined by factoring part of the equation in a way that reveals a hidden structure. Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.

- Nov 55:30 PMReception and panel discussion for LIS exhibitThis exhibition brings together the work of fourteen contemporary artists who have engaged with one of the largest tidal estuaries on the Atlantic coast of the United States through their work. The Sound, which stretches from the East River in New York, to the Rhode Island border, covers 1,300 square miles, and is the home to 1,200 species of invertebrates, 120 species of fish, and dozens of migratory birds. Its watershed covers 16,820 square miles and is home to over nine million people. The rich maritime history of the Sound began with Native peoples before European colonization, and continues to the present day, particularly with commercial shell fishing and recreational boating. As much of the art in the exhibition will attest, Long Island Sound is a microcosm of many of the issues that are currently affecting the Earth's environment, including species extinction, plastic pollution, and global warming. The artists included in the exhibition were chosen for their varied approaches to the estuary, revealing the complex and often surprising ways artists have considered the Sound, its history, and its environs. This exhibition, curated by artist, independent curator and writer Richard Klein, was organized following his 2024 residency at Peck's Ledge Lighthouse, sponsored by The Norwalk Art Space. Peck's Ledge Light, built in 1906, is in the Sound, one mile off Norwalk's Calf Pasture Beach.
